For many attendees, a question hung in the air about the next designer at Chanel.

It was a Paris Fashion Week full of rumors. The shows took place as Chanel, perhaps the most famous Parisian fashion house, looks for a creative director in the wake of Virginie Viard’s departure earlier this year. For many attendees, a question hung in the air: What if this designer took over at Chanel?

As usual, celebrities were in abundance. Pharrell Williams, creative director of menswear at Louis Vuitton, was in dad mode in the front row of Loewe. Cardi B synergized with the models at Mugler, wearing her bangs in the same arresting, emo-adjacent style that appeared on the catwalk. Greta Gerwig looked distinctly un-Barbie in sophisticated black at a Chanel event. Gigi Hadid conjured up memories of Keira Knightley’s deep green “Atonement” dress walking on the runway for Victoria Beckham. Though one French fashion house’s future is casting a long shadow, in other words, Paris’s star power wasn’t dimmed at all.
